Implant-based and autologous (DIEP, TRAM) breast reconstruction after mastectomy — performed by ISAPS-credentialed reconstructive surgeons, often in coordination with oncology teams in your home country.
Overview
Reconstruction after breast cancer is one of the most demanding pieces of plastic surgery we perform — and one of the most rewarding. Most full reconstructions take two to three stages over twelve to eighteen months.
The consultation
Every reconstruction begins with a detailed consultation — in person or by video — with your surgical record, pathology report, and any radiation history in hand. We assess skin quality, chest-wall anatomy, donor sites, and any constraints imposed by prior treatment. Where possible, we involve your oncologist directly. Patients flying from abroad receive a pre-consultation checklist and a detailed written plan before they book flights.
Choosing your technique
The right reconstruction depends on your anatomy, treatment history, and how much downtime you can take. Implant-based reconstruction is faster and involves less donor-site morbidity; autologous reconstruction (DIEP, TRAM) uses your own tissue, lasts a lifetime, and tends to produce the most natural result. We will recommend the approach that suits you specifically — not the one that is easiest for us.
The procedure
Implant-based reconstructions take two to three hours under general anaesthetic. Autologous flap reconstructions are longer — six to eight hours for a DIEP, five to seven for a TRAM — and require microsurgical expertise. All procedures are performed in our ACHSI-accredited theatres with two-night hospital observation and a private nursing team in your villa from day three.
Recovery & staging
Most reconstructions are staged: primary surgery, then a symmetrising procedure or nipple reconstruction three to six months later. Recovery from the first stage is ten to twenty-one nights on the island, depending on the procedure. We provide full insurance documentation and coordinate directly with your home oncologist for continuity of care.
